Vinyl Edge Styles
Different types of vinyl flooring edges create unique looks, but also come with a few specific performance considerations. Choosing a flooring edge style is primarily about design preference, but read on to learn more about vinyl plankl and tile edge styles.
What are vinyl flooring edge styles?
The vinyl flooring edge style is the finished end of the flooring surface of a plank or tile. This is where the planks/tiles will meet one another during installation. The edge can create a visual divide from one plank to the next, or make it look seamless-- this is dependent on the type of edge. Also, certain types of edges can provide some forgiveness if the base floor has imperfections. If the flooring type has a tongue and groove, this is not part of the edge, as it will not be visible after installation. Each of these flooring edge styles accentuate and enhance specific plank and tile designs.
Micro-Beveled Edge Style
This type of flooring edge has a slight slope and creates some distinction between planks rather than having a seamless appearance like a square edge. This is used on thicker flooring, that has a minimum of a 12mil wear layer. Many Allure ISOCORE products have this edge style.
Square Edge Style
This type of edge is cut at a 90° angle. As the planks are installed, the edges create an almost seamless appearance. Usually seen on thinner flooring when there is not enough thickness to create a beveled edge. A square edge does not create any divots between planks which can prevent dust and dirt build up. Does not provide much forgiveness when installed over an imperfect floor.
Painted Bevel Edge Style
This type of edge has a more noticeable painted slope that creates clear distinction between planks rather than having a seamless appearance like a square edge. The color of the painted bevel is chosen to closely compliment the main flooring color and pattern. Painted bevel edges are used on thicker flooring, that should have a minimum of a 12mil wear layer. Some Allure ISOCORE products are available in this edge style.
Grouted Edge Style
This type of edge has a steeper slope (deep bevel) and painted to coordinate with the design of the floor. This is typically seen on a thicker floor to be able to accommodate the steepness of the bevel's slope. This helps to create the look of authentic hardwood floors and more distinction from one plank to the next. This is also used on select LVT tile designs.
Pillowed Edge Style
This type of edge has a rounded edge, like a pillow. It provides a look similar to the edge of a hand-scraped hardwood floor. Since it is not a sharply defined edge, there is some forgiveness when installing over an imperfect floor. You'll find this edge treatment sometimes on barnwood style LVP floors.
